Realistic survival overhaul.

Vanilla survival with body temperature, weight, seasons and falling blocks added on top. The parts of Minecraft that already work stay as they are.

How the world works

Your body has a temperature

Rain, swimming and cold nights all chill you down. Stay cold for too long and you slow down, get weaker, and eventually start taking damage.

Animals keep to herds

Cows, sheep and chickens move around together and scatter when you get close. Dinner takes a bit of stalking.

Blocks fall when nothing holds them

Anything without support comes down in one piece and hurts whatever it lands on. Weak spots glow red, if you're looking. It runs on Avalanche, Ember's physics system.

Trees come down whole

Bigger trees take longer to chop and need a better axe. When it goes, the whole trunk topples, so mind where you're standing.

Metal is earned in order

Ores won't break for the wrong pickaxe. Getting to bronze means firing clay moulds, mixing copper with tin and pouring it yourself.

Crops follow the seasons

Every crop has its own seasons and its own idea of warm enough. A frost can wipe out a field overnight, so a heated room might be the safer bet.

Rivers that actually run

Water flows downhill and keeps going until it finds somewhere lower. It runs on Monsoon, Ember's water system.

Days change with the year

Summer days stretch out and winter ones close in early. Plan the long trips for when the light lasts.

Things you make

Closed rooms hold their heat

Every room has its own temperature. A fire warms it up, gaps and open doors let the heat out, and a kiln won't fire in a cold one.

Fire is a thing you tend

A campfire burns down fast once it's lit. Keep feeding it wood and it cooks your food and warms anyone sitting close by.

Rooms with purpose

Furniture decides whether a room is a bedroom or a lounge. Sleep in a proper bedroom to set your respawn, and rest in a lounge to recover from the cold faster.

Tools start as knapped stone

Bash pebbles together for an edge, knap stone into tool heads and fit them onto sticks. There's no crafting table, just a basket you weave.

Your pockets are your hotbar

The rest of your inventory starts locked. Make a leather backpack and wear it to open up more room.

Tap the trees

Set a tap into a log and it slowly collects sap while you get on with something else.

Trains you build yourself

Lay the track, put a train together and ride it somewhere far away. It runs on Conductor, Ember's rail system.

Voice carries, walls muffle it

Talk to whoever is nearby and the walls between you get in the way. Build radios and walkie-talkies to reach friends further off.

The long version

Minecraft, if it actually tried to kill you

Vanilla survival gets easy fairly quickly. Before long you have full diamond armour and more food than you can eat.

Atom stays hard for longer. You knap your first tool out of a rock, ration your food, stay warm and keep your base sealed.

How the first hour looks

  1. Pick up sticks and stones. Explore your immediate surroundings and find what you need to survive.
  2. Sharpen your stones. Knap them on hard rock into sharpened flint. It breaks eventually, so make spares.
  3. Kill something small. Scrape the hide on a leather bed. Cook the meat over a fire.
  4. Wall off a room before nightfall. The game tracks whether a room is sealed, and a sealed room keeps the heat in.

Progression

Atom is a long-running survival overhaul. You progress by learning how the systems work.
